Motivation
The OctoPods draw inspiration from the novel design of octopus suckers, featuring a visually striking appearance. In a unique twist, each pod houses its own compute power, mirroring the decentralized intelligence found in an octopus's motor neurons. This design ensures a sleek and powerful aesthetic while incorporating a touch of biomimicry.
As a nod to the octopus's remarkable ability to multitask with many tentacles simultaneously, the OctoPods enable you to effortlessly manage multiple tasks at the same time. Each pod serves as a versatile point of access, allowing you to seamlessly juggle various activities – just like the multitasking prowess of an octopus with many tentacles.
Methodology and Fabrication
Equipped with 3D printed and nylon mesh padding, each pod ensures both comfort and durability. The programmable RFID sensor transforms each pod into a customizable task manager. The microchip on the RFID reader can be written with whatever information the user wants using Ultra High Frequency Near Field Communication (UHF NFC) at 865 – 960 MHz. A simple tap of your phone on a pod retrieves critical information specific to the task you want to accomplish at that location.
Moreover, the OctoPods goes beyond personal productivity. Share your pods with accountability partners or friends by allowing them to tap their phone on a pod. This feature facilitates seamless collaboration and provides a quick overview of your activities, fostering a sense of shared accountability.
Software (Programmable Automation)
OctoPods seamlessly integrates with "If This Then That" (IFTTT) software and Apple Shortcuts, creating an online digital automation platform. You can connect your applications to pre-designed sequences and leverage tools like IFTTT AI’s content creation or social media post creator to streamline your workflow. Now you’re ready to program the OctoPods with IFTTT to reduce your cognitive load and enhance productivity effortlessly.
Real-Life Testing and Prototyping
Constructed from durable white EVA foam, OctoPods were tested to successfully attach to the inside of a glove, the shoulder strap of a backpack, or to strategically place individuals pods on surfaces one frequently accesses. This adaptability caters to everyday users and provides a valuable solution for those with limited motor capabilities, allowing them to place pods in convenient locations without being confined to rigid form factors.
Inspiration
As a previous consulting intern in a competitive biotechnology firm, I was challenged with a high cognitive workload. I looked up to McKinsey & Company to help manage my regimented lifestyle with concurrent projects for international clients. That’s when I found the 3x3x3 approach! This framework encourages you to define three development goals, over a three-month period, engaging three other people to support you in those goals and hold you accountable. It’s a framework they use to help their consultants practice intentional learning in different client project cycles and professional development training. I used this strategy to help me organize work goals but I was left with many files and reminders on my notes app. Gradually, this digital To-Do List felt disconnected from my daily routine and was not sustainable in its original form. So, I decided to integrate the 3x3x3 approach into a wearable attachment that placed physical cues in locations where I needed information related to tasks I wanted to accomplish. That’s when I decided to build OctoPods as a task-management tool and on-the-go physical To-Do List. After I used the OctoPods, I noticed my cognitive load reduced with the automation sequences I set with the three sets of 3x3x3 programmable pods.
The most effective strategy for setting development goals that sustain continuous lifelong learning.
